Cancer Care Center

A History of healing

In 1992 Bay Area Medical Center recognized the need for the very best cancer care close to home and partnered with Green Bay’s St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center to open the Bay Area Cancer Center. St. Vincent’s nationally recognized Regional Cancer Center provided staffing expertise in radiation oncology that was remarkable for a community our size. For 15 years this successful partnership has provided superior cancer treatment focusing on respect and the needs of each patient.

Cancer care for the next generation

To further enhance the quality of treatment available to cancer patients and their families in Northeast Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula, the Cancer Center completed a $7 million expansion project in 2005. This project included installing the latest technology also found at the most renowned cancer centers in the nation - a Varian Medical Systems linear accelerator with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) capability. IMRT delivers high doses of radiation directly to cancer cells - precisely targeting the shape of the tumor while sparing more of the surrounding healthy tissue. In many cases IMRT techniques significantly improve cure rates and reduce treatment time and complications because healthy tissue is better protected. Bay Area also offers PET (Position Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography) scanning. PET/CT scanning is the superior diagnostic imaging tool for revealing the disease much earlier than other diagnostic tools and can also determine how well a course of treatment is working.

A team-centered multidisciplinary approach

At the Bay Area Cancer Center, medical and radiation oncologists work side by side to determine the best, most comprehensive plan of care for patients. A highly qualified team that includes physicists, radiation therapists, a certified medical dosimetrist and oncology certified nurses provides radiation and drug therapy five days a week. This care team also extends to medical professionals at Bay Area Medical Center who provide medical/surgical care, high-end diagnostic imaging, pastoral care, social services and dietary consulting. Patients who require hospitalization stay in a special wing staffed by oncology-certified nurses. Each step of the way, patients receive care from professionals who truly understand what they are facing.

A healing environment

The Cancer Center offers a visually healing environment. The colors and textures of the rooms and furnishings, and the bright and cheerful surroundings are selected with the special needs of our patients and families  in mind. The Cancer Center features nearly two dozen local paintings, photographs and a signature waterfall to inspire warmth, nourishment and healing. Look beyond the new equipment and facility, and you will see many of the same faces present at the Cancer Center’s original opening in 1992. As they did then, these caregivers recognize that cancer is not like any other disease. They know the impact when a patient first hears the words, “you have cancer.” The Cancer Center staff heals more than the body - they also heal the mind and spirit. The staff’s commitment is seen in the way each patient is treated with care, dignity and shared humor. A family develops that includes other patients as well as the many caregivers at Bay Area Medical Center.

Combined clinic concept

The Bay Area Cancer Care Center is a model program that places all services under one roof. At one central location, attached to Bay Area Medical Center, the Cancer Care Center coordinates all therapeutic services. Whether the cancer is treated with radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of both approaches, the combined clinic concept makes treatment more convenient for the patient and also allows all patient information to be coordinated on one chart. Radiation oncologists, a medical oncologist and specially trained technicians provide the high-tech cancer treatment. In addition to providing superior medical and radiation oncology, the Cancer Center has also begun conducting clinical trials through its partnership with St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center. Clinical trials can offer new hope to patients, and give our doctors and staff access to cutting-edge treatments before they become available nationwide.
