Image-Guided Radiation Therapy

IGRTThe Bay Area Cancer Center offers Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) for the treatment of cancer. This is a fast, precise form of radiotherapy that is two to eight times faster than conventional treatments, and is possible through RapidArc.

As the patient is receiving treatment, pictures of the tumor are taken, and these images help guide the radiation directly to the tumor. IGRT technology improves treatment accuracy by precise image guidance, and significantly reduces the time the patient has to lie on the table.

The ongoing challenge in treating cancer with radiation is that tumors often move between treatments or even during treatment. By having the imaging system on board physicians can see exactly where the tumor is, and can deliver radiation with greater precision. This means less damage to healthy tissue and fewer side effects for the patient. With IGRT the entire treatment is often completed with a single rotation of the machine.

Bay Area’s Cancer Center offers the most advanced treatment options based on each patient’s specific clinical circumstances. In some instances patients with cancer who could not be retreated in the past, can now receive help using IGRT and/or RapidArc radiotherapy.

With the combination of cutting-edge technology and a team of expert physicians, BAMC is able to offer the very best in cancer care. It’s remarkable that such progressive treatment options are available locally.
