Med/Surg – One East, Two East, and Float Pool         

Department Director:  Bobbi Morton

• Med/Surg – One East offers 24/7 quality patient care; meeting the JCAHO standards for Patient Rights/Ethics, Patient Safety, Infection Control, Provision of Care, Process Improvements, Laboratory and Medication Management.  The department is budgeting for approximately 1428 patient admissions to go through their department in 2007.
• One East is unique from similar departments at other hospitals because of the type of patients.  In addition to Med/Surg, they also offer nursing care to both pediatric and orthopedic patients.  This high quality of care which can be provided to such a wide range of ages is one of the department’s greatest strengths.
• There are 33 beds in One East; one of these rooms is designated for bariatric patients and three are designated for pediatric patients.  Several of the rooms in One East are intended for use by orthopedic patients.  3 rooms designated for pediatric patients
• The employees in One East collaborate well. They strive as a team; constantly providing each other with assistance in all aspects of their jobs.  This work ethic is observed throughout the organization providing the department with a reputation of being both professional and cooperative.
• Within the next year, One East is working to increase patient satisfaction to the top 10 percentile.  They also intend on increasing their current staff ratios to 8.5 hours of care per patient and improving the timeliness of physician notification of critical lab results.
• Med/Surg – Two East offers 24/7 nursing care; meeting the JCAHO standards for Patient Rights/Ethics, Patient Safety, Infection Control, Provision of Care, Process Improvements, Laboratory and Medication Management.  The department is budgeting for approximately 1792 patient admissions to go through their department in 2007.
• Two East is unique from similar departments at other hospitals because of the type of patients that they treat.  In addition to Med/Surg they also offer nursing care to oncology patients.  The department is also distinctive in the fact that they are working to become primarily an RN staff.
• There are 29 beds in Two East; nine of these are set aside for oncology patients, two of which are suites where the family is able to stay in the room attached to the patients’.
• The employees in Two East exhibit a strong work ethic. They all work well together and the department has a call-in rate of less than 2%.  The team takes pride in what they’re doing and in improving patient care.
• Med/Surg areas use a computerized system to document patient information.  This program was designed in Meditech by a group of nurses employed at BAMC..
