Breast Cancer Center/Mammography
The women’s center offers mammography screening to assist in the detection of breast cancer. Mammograms have the ability to detect a tumor before it is big enough for you or your doctor to detect. The mammography center provides same-day results to take the stress out of waiting. Mammograms are recommended for women over 40 every one or two years. A mammogram only takes a few seconds, but the results can be lifesaving.
Free Mammograms
Breast cancer affects a woman’s mind, body and spirit. Give yourself or someone you love the gift of good health this year. Now available all year round! With digital mammograms, same day results, and nurse navigators to provide education, insight, and advice, Bay Area Medical Center provides a superior experience.
Digital Mammography
Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) is an alternative to film-screen mammography for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. Like conventional mammography, FFDM uses X-rays to produce images of the breast. An electronic detector plate converts X-rays into digital images that can be reviewed and archived on a computer. The radiologist can manipulate the brightness, contrast and other features of the digital mammogram with post-processing tools on a workstation. FFDM attempts to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage than film screen mammography while also reducing the effective radiation dose to the patient.
Computer aided detection (CAD) systems are also available with FFDM to facilitate lesion detection. FFDM offers detection benefits over film-screen mammography for some patients. It is more diagnostically accurate than film in women younger than 50 years, women with radiographically dense breasts, and in premenopausal and erimenopausal women. Since time-consuming film processing is eliminated, technologists can assess each image immediately after exposure, reducing patient wait time.
Digital mammography also offers the advantages that images can be stored and retrieved easily, and transmitted electronically for review by another radiologist. However, digital mammography is much more costly than film mammography and it does not appear to offer any benefit for women who do not fall in one of the above categories. Standard film mammography is used more today than digital mammography, though digital mammography is becoming more available. Insurance coverage for digital mammography varies, so it is important to talk to your patient about this.
Benefits of Digital Mammography
- Ability to improve contrast between dense and non-dense breast tissue
- Ability to take images in a shorter period of time
- Reduced exam time for patient
- Reduced need for patient to return after screening mammography for additional film studies
- Quicker results for patients
- Easier image storage and quicker retrieval of pictures when needed
- More accurate detection of breast cancer because of ability to zoom in and magnify an area
- Ability to transmit images over a phone line to another physician’s computer for a second opinion

The library is the property of the Marinette & Menominee County Breast Cancer Support Group. Incontinence
The women’s center offers several programs to assist women with incontinence. Incontinence is loss of bladder control, which can range from a mild leak to uncontrollable wetting. Most bladder problems develop when the muscles are too weak or when they are over-active. Incontinence can occur when sneezing, coughing, laughing or lifting an object. Incontinence can also be a symptom of nerve damage.
Incontinence Screening
It is estimated that as many as one in four women may experience urinary incontinence at some time in their lives. However, most women go untreated or take years to report it to their health care provider. Many women see urinary incontinence as a normal sign of aging. Our quest is to educate the public and empower women to gain control over their symptoms and improve the quality of their lives.
Urodynamic Testing
Urodynamic testing is a study to see how the bladder is performing. Conclusions from the test can indicate if the bladder and urethra are releasing urine correctly and effectively storing urine.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is a series of exercises prescribed by a incontinence specialist used to strengthen the bladder sphincter muscle. Bay Area Medical Center provides two physical therapy specialists for further assistance.
Uterine Suspension Procedures
Uterine suspension is a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure
performed to strengthen the uterus. Bay Area Medical Center
provides two doctors who perform uterine suspension procedures.
Osteoporosis
The women’s center offers osteoporosis screenings. During youth,
new bone mass is added and old bone mass is removed. As people age, the
amount of new bone mass addition decreases and the amount of old bone
mass increases causing bones to become weak and fragile. Women are at
a higher risk for osteoporosis than men. Having regular screenings can
help prevent osteoporosis and reduce bone loss.
Womens’ Heart Health
The Cardiac Center at Bay Area Medical Center educates women about the importance of reducing and controlling cardiac risk factors. Women are offered a variety of opportunities to assess cardiac risk factors and are given support to improve their diet, reduce stress, and change their lifestyle to improve their overall health. Regular screenings, educational programs, workshops and consultative services are available.
