Bay Area Medical Center (BAMC) is a Safe Place for Newborns. This means a parent may confidentially leave their unharmed newborn with BAMC—without threat of legal action.
The Safe Place for Newborns exists to save the lives of newborn babies that may be in danger of abandonment. It gives mothers another choice rather than choosing to abandon the newborn in an unsafe place.
If the newborn is 3 days old or less, unharmed, and brought to a hospital employee at BAMC by the mother or a person acting with the mother's permission, the mother:
- Has the right to remain anonymous.
- May be given information that the hospital deems appropriate.
- Must not be followed or detained; no police will be called.
